After my first installation of Ubuntu 12.04, I forgot my login password and need to recover it.
To recover it you need to follow these steps:
1. Boot your computer.
2. When you get the grub menu, select option with recover as shown in figure.
3. This will take you to recovery menu. In recovery menu select option "drop to root shell" as shown in figure.
4. A shell prompt will be displayed at the bottom of the screen with root as username. To change the password of particular user say naveen
type:
passwd naveen
5. The above command will ask you to enter your new password and retype password. Type your new password.
6. You might get "Authentication Manipulation error". If you get this error then you need to type :
mount -rw -o remount /
And again follow step 4 and 5.

ReplyDeletemount -rw -o remount /
Ah typo
DeleteThanks for the correction
Thank you. Than normal Linux users are vulnerable to this method. How can we secure this so no one can take the same steps.
ReplyDeletethe default password for root (username)(root) (passwd)(password)(rt)is not working for me plz help.
ReplyDeletesame thing happen to me, the problem is, i cannot access the grub menu..when i boot ubuntu it sends me straight to my desktop..no grub menu. how can i get to the grub menu.
ReplyDeleteYou can get your grub menu by re-installing it. use this link http://naveenubuntu.blogspot.in/2011/01/restoring-grub2mbr.html
ReplyDeletethanks for the suggestion..
ReplyDeleteI tried it but it didnt work
ReplyDeletewhen u start up the computer press shift nad hold it till grub menu appears
Deletehttp://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/reset-your-ubuntu-password-easily-from-the-live-cd/
ReplyDeleteAnother option to change root password from a live CD for those bypassing the grub boot menu. For those who are concerned about physical security access, you are offered to encrypt your home folder on installation. Changing the password with physical access to the machine will leave nothing but gibberish for the user without the exact and original password as noted here.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1534704
As is readily seen, even knowing the original password can be devastating in attempting to recover data in this situation. Add a separate user account for others who are allowed access to the computer is a best practice to prevent someone with physical access (room-mate) from attempting to be an idiot just to get on facebook.
Can you explain the last command please?? I'll be really thankfull :)
ReplyDeleteWhat does -rw and -o means and how does remounting helps in changing the password??
"-rw" : Mount the filesystem read/write. This is the default
Delete"-o" : means enable options
Will remount creates any problem to the existing files in Ubuntu.??
Deleteyes
ReplyDeletemount / -rw -o remount /
and then
passwd user
I successfully reset the root password thanks mate!!!
ReplyDeleteI tried this but it won't let me type a new password
ReplyDeleteto enter in root it is asking root passwd even if press at "root drop shell prompt"
ReplyDeleteto enter in root it is asking root passwd even if press at "root drop shell prompt"
ReplyDeletehey i'm Yoro and i get the same pb and the worse is i did not know the root password and even i tried to follow some instruction gave here,my keyboard does not repond when i typed,, it's like is blocked or frozen.I don't know what to do know. ReplyDeleteHi thankyou its working fine.

ReplyDelete@naveen Hey thanks bro :) Its really helpful :)
ReplyDeleteIt's still giving token manipulate error !
ReplyDeleteI allways get an option list when I typ: passwd Peter Mortier
ReplyDeleteIf I typ passwd without mijn account name I get the question to typ my new password, but always getting the same answer. that authentification is not good good and password not changed...
Heeeelp... :-)
Your username is not Peter Mortier but one without spaces and often all lowercase.
DeleteIf you have used the original installation to create your user account if automatically suggest your firstname in lowercase as username - in your case peter.
So try this command instead:
passwd peter
If is still the wrong username then enter this command which will show the username for every user who have Peter within their fullname:
grep -i Peter /etc/passwd | cut -f1 -d:
The command takes all the lines in the file /etc/passwd which contains Peter in both lower and upper case (the option -i is the ignore case option) and cut the lines so only the first field (-f1) ahead of the delimiter : (-d:) is shown.
The most enjoyable greetings
I followed these directions and received the message "password updated successfully." However, the reason I was doing this is that I had enabled "automatic login" and now when I look at my account information, it shows Password: none. I am unable to authenticate to add software, install updates or disable auto login.
ReplyDeleteWhy does my account still show no password when I seem to have updated it successfully?
Help!
I have the same problem as Anonymous. I enabled automatic login and now I can't run updates or anything with my password.
ReplyDeleteI fixed it from terminal. Changed password there and fixed the problem. Not sure how or why it happened.
ReplyDeleteI have followed the instructions above, but when i tried to use the "mount -rw -o remount/" it did not solve the error the next time i tried, is there a reason for this?
ReplyDeleteyou missed a space after "remount" and before the "/" character.
Deletein shell i have updated a user's login password being root. It show password updated successfully. But if i tries to login with the new password(entered correctly , no mistake in that) it won,t let me to login as that user. what could be the reason and where i can check these details.
ReplyDeletesame here
DeleteThanks. It was of great help....
ReplyDeleteJames McCombe,
ReplyDeleteYou missed a space character after "remount".
I don't think so. Space is already there between remount and /.
DeleteIf you got an authenticate error even you entered the mount command its because you forget a space between "remount" and "/"
ReplyDeleteCan you add that if you dont get the grub menu to hold down the left shift key when the system completes post but prior to loading the OS.
ReplyDeleteThnx,
ReplyDeletewhen i get to the "Enter new UNIX password:" command, it doesnt let me enter a password
ReplyDeleteme too im desperate i need help with that i have 12.04 pleaseeee help
DeleteI successfully changed the password but cant login with the changed password
ReplyDeletesame here
DeleteSame here: I still cannot login even after a successful change of the password! There is not even the usual red incorrect password warning over the text field. The login prompt momentarily disappears as if I'm about to login OK, a black screen with commands appears for 1 or 2 seconds and then, unfortunately, I'm once more redirected at the login prompt again (!!!) This is driving me nuts, cause I tried it several times, with different pwd lenghts and complexities, but to no avail... Any ideas?! Thanks in advance!!
