If you are looking for adding folder shortcuts/ bookmarks to the left sidebar of Nautilus Manger (folder explorer), then you have come to the right place. The image below shows the finally added bookmarks.
In Ubuntu 12.04, you cannot directly Drag and Drop folder to the sidebar. This problem occurs only for the first bookmark. If you have added the first bookmark, then you can Drag and Drop elements.

To add your first bookmark:
1. Go to your folder and press Ctrl + D (or ADD from Bookmark option in menu bar).
This will add your first bookmark as shown below. In my case the folder was example-content.
2. Now you can Drag and Drop your folder into the Bookmarks.

DeleteI found that I could not just select a folder and then add the bookmark; I had to go INTO the folder and then add the bookmark.
This was easier in prior versions, and there is no indication while in the app of how this has changed or what to do. How many people just gave up and never found this page or one like it?
Ubuntu is such a mess now. It is getting harder and harder to use it. Android seems to be on the upswing. The interface is designed for end users; linux is STILL designed for hackers. Ask a noob question, and you'll just be ignored all too often. But linux and ubuntu are full desktop OSes. Android is still not.
I look forward to the day that android comes of age and I can finally relegate linux to just my file server (if that). I know it is under the covers of android, but it just repeatedly sucks trying to get things done in linux, even those things that I used to know how to do.

DeleteThey seem to have made some changes which have broken the sidebar functionality. Yes you can drag folders there as shortcuts, but you can't remove the junk ones that almost nobody uses (music, pictures, videos). Worst of all, while you can drag things to any of the preconfigured but unremovable shortcuts, you can't drag anything to the bookmarks! They really are just bookmarks. You want to drag to them? Then open another window or dual pane, click on the bookmark, click back, then copy stuff over. It's really a big step backwards for an otherwise very modern file manager.

DeleteI figured it out by "Edit Bookmarks" Ctrl + B and overwriting one of the existing bookmarks ("Videos" in my case). Surprisingly, the former bookmark was not removed and the new one appeared in the left side bar.

ReplyDeleteThe 'Bookmarks' title does not appear by default on the nautilus sidebar. Adding a bookmark does not seem to work unless the title is present. I did like 'Anonymous' did. You edit an existing bookmark (like video) with your folder and it will then create the new bookmark title with your bookmark in it and it will also leave intact the video bookmark

Since there, it is not evolving, its constantly changing to new paradigms,
try to imitate Apple and to re-invent the wheel, but usability get worse
in every new version...
For myself, I found a solution for adding bookmarks:
ReplyDeleteOpen a terminal and type
sudo gedit ~/.gtk-bookmarks
I appears that default folders will be under the "Computer" while other folders will appear under the "Bookmarks." This was in Linux Mint Maya Cinnamon, but I think it should translate across to Ubuntu.
you can also change user permissions for ~/.gtk-bookmarks.
DeleteI noticed that write permissions were missing. add write permissions and ctrl-D works for adding bookmarks.
The solution is indeed to go into the folder you want to add and press Ctrl + D. It would be useful if it would also take currently selected folder in the central panel as well. Or open a warning dialog explaining what you need to do instead of just doing nothing at all...

Dragging doesn't work for me, even if there is already items there. It only works if I used Ctrl+D.
ReplyDeleteAh-ha! it is now possible in 12.04 to remove the 'junk' shortcuts. Just press ctrl+b when in the folder browser, and remove the ones you don't want, and add the ones you do.
